Car import duty in Kenya: KRA duty, excise and VAT

Estimate

Uses KRA's method and rates (KRA rates from KRA's CRSP template, July 2025). KRA's own assessment is final.

1. Your car

Make

From KRA's July 2025 CRSP list.

Model

Type part of the name or model code, like fielder or NKE165.

CRSP value

KSh

KRA's price for this model when new. Picking a model fills it in. It is not the price on the import website.

Year of first registration

Kenya takes cars up to 8 years old, counted from first registration.

2. Vehicle details

Picking a model fills these in. Change them if your car differs.

Vehicle type

Pickups, lorries and buses pay less excise above 1500cc.

Engine type

Engine size

Excise duty depends on it for petrol and diesel vehicles.

3. Total cost (optional)

Add the car's price to see what it costs in Kenya with the taxes.

How KRA works it out: it takes the CRSP, takes off a set percentage for the car's age, then removes its 25% dealer margin and the taxes already inside a retail price. What is left is the customs value. Import duty, excise duty, VAT and the two fees are charged on that. What you paid for the car does not change the taxes. Prime movers pay no excise, and motorcycles pay a fixed excise of KSh 12,952.83.
